A mean-hearted old miser, Ebenezer Scrooge is asked to donate to a charity for very poor people, on Christmas Eve. Scrooge sends the collectors away with a flea in their ears, and complains to his assistant, Bob Cratchit, that he will have to pay Bob for the following day even though Bob takes Christmas Day off. “Bah! Humbug!” is his response to the true meaning of Christmas.

That night, Scrooge is visited in his dreams by 3 phantoms. Phantom 1 shows him past happy Christmases and the gradual change in him to value money over love. Phantom 2 shows him the love that presently exists in the Cratchit household despite their poverty, plus a merry family enjoying Christmas together. Phantom 3 shows him Scrooge’s future death and gravestone which are desolate and mourned by no-one.

When Scrooge awakens from the dream on Christmas morning, he has experienced an emotional awakening from the lessons of the dream. He realises that human relationships, compassion and neighbourliness give meaning and joy to life, unlike the love of money, which is a cold-hearted relationship.

One of our favourite Christmas fables, here at Money Natters! We believe that money, used wisely, is our friend, but developing an overriding interest in money can be detrimental to relationships. Remember the old saying, ‘The Love of money is the root of all kinds of evil’.  Notice it isn’t the money itself, but the love of it, at the expense of other good things in life, that is the problem.

So have a Fabulous and Awesome Christmas 2018 you good person, you, and remember to show your love to everyone who crosses your path!
